My 30 Day Yoga Challenge, Day 9
(Embrace The Pause)
[ Saturday Night Yin ]
Yin on a Saturday night is perfect for me. Saturdays are my off days, my days of rest, and I have found a great teacher who leads a Saturday Night Yin Class that I enjoy going to. I do my best to shut off from work and obligations on Saturdays, and ending a restful day with this form of yoga practice is like a delicious dream.
[ The Experience ]
As I walked to class, with snow on the ground from the night before, I almost couldn’t believe how much I was looking forward to starting my Saturday night in deep, relaxing Yin postures.
I dressed warmly to shut out the chill from the cold, and only shed one layer as I entered the yoga studio.
The teacher started us with some movement postures to help us warm up.
Then, we got into equal breathing, or Sama Vritti Pranayama:
[ The Takeaway ]
We did a modification of the equal breathing technique, creating a pause in between our inhales and exhales. I thought this was very powerful. The teacher noted, “in the pause of the breath is where it is said you will be able to quiet the mind.” She also encouraged us to notice our breath, as it is an expression of how our mind is operating.
Throughout the class, I practiced the equal breathing in twisted postures and lengthening postures, as I deepened into the holds that helped open joints, ligaments and fascia within my body.
I embraced the pause between the inhales and exhales and savored the pauses between the moves more because of my newfound awareness of adding pause to breath.
This reminded me that breathing is great, but to have pause is divine…
