I’ve been reading a lot about it and
feel the benefits from it but what exactly does meditation do for the body?
I know it activates certain parts of the brain but I’m not clear on what exactly that means. 

One of my clients asked me this in my inbox and I thought it would be a great series to dive into with you.

Sure, I’ve written about my personal experiences with meditation, like the time I I did a 10-day yoga challenge (starting at day 95).  But you probably were wondering, “what does meditation do for the body?”

We live in an overly stimulated world, so when you can channel energy to make yourself feel good, your body can literally carry you longer and work more optimally!

As a youth, Levine was incarcerated several times. His first book, Dharma Punx, details teenage years filled with drugs, violence, and multiple suicide attempts—choices fuelled by disillusionment with American mainstream culture. His substance abuse started early in life—at age six he began smoking marijuana—and finally ended in a padded detoxification cell in juvenile prison 11 years later. It was in this cell where he hit “an emotional rock bottom” and began his vipassana practice “out of a place of extreme drug addiction and violence” While incarcerated, he saw for the first time how the practice his father taught him gave him the tools to relieve the fear and uncertainty that pervaded his life.

One notable aspect of Buddhist Dharma is the path of our choices, the actions past and present and the intention for future action (Buddhist Law of Karma). Levine’s past—addiction, incarceration, violence, initial rejection of Buddhism and meditation—are all defining characteristics of his writings and teachings. “We all sort of have a different doorway to dharma or spiritual practice. Suffering is a doorway. For me it was the suffering of addiction, violence and crime which opened me at a young age, 17 years old. I was incarcerated, looking at the rest of my life in prison and thought, ‘Maybe I will try dad’s hippie meditation bullshit.’ Suffering opened me to the possibility of trying meditation.”

He currently leads Dharma and vipassana meditation retreats and workshops across the United States and teaches weekly meditation classes in Los Angeles. A member of the Prison Dharma Network, Levine works with juvenile and adult prison inmates, combining meditation techniques with psychotherapy. He “explores how they can have a deeper understanding of what has happened and what they need to do in order to be free, on many levels—free from prison, free from the trauma of the past.”

He has helped found several groups and projects including the Mind Body Awareness Project, a non-profit organization that serves incarcerated youths. Introducing them to the Buddha’s teachings. He lists the 14th Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Ram Dass, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Norman Fischer, and Sylvia Boorstein as his teachers.

  [ The Experience ]

101 days ago, I challenged myself to meditate and chant for 40 consecutive days.  

Often times, we forget that what we need is already here and that the blue skies we are so desperately searching for, are here, too.  They are simply just above the grey clouds we are focused on.

Today work day was thrown off a bit due to needing to rest through my first day of my Lady Time.  I started to say screw it to the meditation, but as I sat for the 10 minutes, I found that my tension ease, my belly felt better and I became less focused on the grey of my day.

[ My thoughts about Headspace ]

Every day will be different.  Every challenge within the day will be different. But with meditation, I am able to recenter and get focused on what is, which allows me to release into the now.  Just ten minutes a day can go a long way if we just give it a chance!

[ Why This Matters To Me ]

When I was 3 years old in 1986, my grandma, a devoted wife of 33 1/2 years and a passionate nurse, died of diabetes.  This has greatly stuck in the back of my mind, especially when I had my first scare of attracting the disease when I was 9 years old.  Fortunately, I have not gone diabetic thus far, but it still is something I do think about because statistically, it is killing more and more adults and children than it did in 1986.

[ Eyes Closed, Listening ]

I did myself a favor today and took a nap after I finished my workday.

Mind you, I’m no nap amateur… I am a regular, Nap Master! However, today’s nap got me to really listen to my heart and my body.  What I heard was, “do Yin“.

[ The Experience ]

Normally on Wednesdays I DJ a 3-hour set at a Bouldering Gym, and today I was off. I’ll be DJ’ing this week on Saturday, instead, for a big competition they are holding. So, I took advantage of the timing to visit the teacher I take Yoga Basics with, who also teaches Yin.

It was nice to get to see her style in this format.  Honestly, I enjoy her teaching style, I just feel I enjoy a different teacher for my Yin class. And that’s perfectly fine, ya know?

After all, yoga is all about YOU, first and foremost.

Still, I’m glad I went because she had me doing simple poses that were a lil’ more uncomfortable today.  I think it’s because my hamstrings were tighter because of Kickboxing yesterday.   Nonetheless, I kept my eyes closed the majority of the time (getting better at trusting) and I felt my way into deepened movement, so as to really open the connective tissues in my body.

[ The Takeaway ]

We tend to only do what feels right. I mean, who wouldn’t, ya know? It makes sense to do what feels good.  However “good” isn’t always the best thing for our growth.

Today the teacher encouraged us to “listen to [our] heart and body”, and embrace the uncomfortable as part of the process of healing.  Though some of the holds and twists were uncomfortable, I embraced them with presence and the fullness of Me. I breathed.

We also focused on our adrenals today, and our teacher reminded us that the best and most efficient way to get the adrenals back in balance is simply through our deep, relaxed breath.

It appears, all roads lead to the breath…

[ Am I Doing This Right? ]

I was feeling a bit tight after yesterday’s rather intense Hatha Yoga Session.

Listening to my body, it was apparent that either a Yin class or another Yoga Basics Class would be beneficial to me today. I took Engagement Photos today with my partner (yay!) and took a deep nap afterward, so the class that fit my body (and my schedule) was a Yoga Basics Class.

It was appropriate, because as I get further into my practice, I find myself wondering, “am I doing this right?”

[ The Experience ]

There is no “right” or “wrong” way, to do your yoga practice, per se. Each individual will have their own approach, and every BODY is unique in how they will receive the practice.

However, there are some techniques that are good to know for all those who do yoga.  I feel one of the most important techniques is learning how to be at ease in the hands, so as to keep and maintain a healthy, relaxed and supported wrist structure.

For example, you can really mess up your wrists in downward dog pose.  The past few days, I’ve been pondering if my hands are being placed properly for this “resting” pose:

Thankfully, we focused on our hands today, paying attention to their proper placement, as well as giving them love through special stretches and circular movements.

[ The Takeaway ]

I love synchronicity.  I am finding that every day I show up to practice, the instructor is giving me exactly what I need to move forward.  At the beginning of the class today, the instructor asked if we had any problem areas in our bodies, and to raise our hands so she could come around and help us.  I didn’t raise my hand, but was so happy that the entire class was devoted to the hands, which I’ve been curious about the past few days.

I do a lot with my hands. We all do. But, I especially do a lot, as a published writer, and an award-winning DJ wherein my sets are at least 3 hours at a time.

Today in class we learned that in Chinese medicine, the hands are an extension of the heart’s meridian lines.  Meaning, everything that we do with our hands is an expression of our hearts. That resonated with me. I use my hands to generate inspiration via life tales, musings and shared information. I use my hands to create, and be a vessel for, music.

Our hands are important. How are you treating your hands? By the same token, what expression do your hands portray? Lastly, do you give and not receive (or vice-versa)?

I often send out emails asking what my clients and audience would like to read about .  I feel there is VALUE in writing, and POWER in writing that speaks to the solving of problems people have.

The other week, I got a response to one of my questions and the person inquired about “How to move away from the stress of NOT Having enough”, essentially in order to have an abundant and exciting business as an Entrepreneur.

So, I’ve dedicated this GentleNudge to help you go from Stressed and Stuck to…

[ Relaxed and Receptive ]

Do you agree the opposite of stress is relaxation? If so, then we are on the same page.

But what do you do to get relaxed? How do you get there? Simply put, you do the opposite of what is causing you stress.

As you can see, these habits apply to any type of Entrepreneur, because at the heart of every person in business for themselves, is an individual striving to live a happy, healthy, WHOLE, life.

[ Upping the Abundance Vibration ]

Just utilizing ONE of the 7 habits will improve your life, and business, tremendously.  Applying all 7 habits will create the balanced foundation to launch you forward in an amazing way. However, I wanted to include 5 more habits that may or may not be as clearly outlined in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

From my work with mentors and studying abundant-minded entrepreneurs, I have come to find these five habits boost your abundance, while continually allowing you to relax.

1) Focus on what you want, not what you don’t  want.

You don’t want stress. But the more you stress about not wanting stress, you’ll just get more stress.

Do yourself a favor and focus on feeling relaxed.  Focus on abundance and the energy around that.  The next habit will help you with this…

2) Celebrate and appreciate what you have and are doing.

3) Provide Offerings Vs. Services.

Be OK providing Offerings, or Gifts, rather than always providing Services, or Something to be monetarily compensated for.  An Abundance mindset means you know you can share your knowledge freely without a price-tag because you know your worth, and know that sometimes, money isn’t how abundance is measured.  It can be measured in opportunity, new partnerships/affiliations, or providing a workshop or article for free that will be received by someone who will tell millions of paying customers about you!

4) Forgive.

Forgive yourself, everyone and your past experience… Let go of your banana.

5) Believe you are enough and you are perfect, just as you are:

Often times people say that I’m greener on the other side,
That you have to go somewhere else
to experience me at my greenest.
But, I’m here to tell you,
That I’m green here,
Right in front of you.
You just choose to forget.
Or, you forget to tend to me,
So that I become less green than I could be.
My point is,
the more you tend to me,
Celebrate me as I am,
and thank me for what I can offer,
right here and now,
maybe, just maybe, you’ll come to realize,
that I am just as green on this side, too.
