[ What To Do ]

I love using tarot, astrology, Doreen Virtue’s cards (Goddess Oracle Cards, Ascendent Master Deck), and even flipping coins to help make decisions.  The latter has even helped me win $2200 in cash and prizes on a game show once…

I love my helpers.  I also know that if you’re like me and use similar tools to make decisions, you resonate with their answers because you already know what to do.

[ The Experience ]

I couldn’t fall asleep last night.  My mind raced with ideas for my business.  They were great, appreciated thoughts, just not what I had planned when I got in bed.  I think it must have taken me about 2 hours to fall asleep.

With about 5 or 6 hours of sleep, I got ready and got to 10 AM Kickboxing. Then I had a day at a craft faire (well, 2.5 hours), and had to get back home before heading to a dinner with some friends.

I was going to catch a 4PM Hatha Yoga class today before going to the dinner. I decided to take a “30 minute” nap, and l ended up sleeping 2 hours and 15 minutes, instead.

[ The Takeaway ]

I didn’t make yoga class today.  I chose to be generous to my Self, to rest and flow with what my body and mind needed.  I was all the more merrier for it.

My day was filled with creativity and yummy physical activity. My evening was filled with laughter, our friend’s two young boys’ antics and delicious vegetarian food.

Yet, when we returned home, I still had time to do some yoga, so I did a 10-minute practice that included meditation, simple, effective postures and some chanting for my chakras.  Afterward, I immersed in a cleansing bath and the day felt complete.

So, did I Yoga or Nap? I did both… I did yoga and I surely did nap.  I did both in ways that suited my body, heart, soul and mind, and on my own terms.  I am proud of myself for allowing myself to flow with life, rather than forcing it into what I thought it should be or what I should do.

As I end my active day, I feel rested and complete. Complete in my Being and complete in accomplishing another day of my commitment to my 30 Day Yoga Challenge.

My 30 Day Yoga Challenge, Day 16

[ R.A.I.N. ]

This whole week I’ve looked forward to doing a Yin class.  I love the teacher and I enjoy being able to turn off in my yoga practice. As I walked to the 730PM class tonight, the air, fresh from earlier rainfall, I became more and more excited for what was to come.  Though excited I was, I was mindful to bring myself back to the present, feeling excited to be outside in the night air, so crisp, so clean. So now.

Rain, or rather water, is a powerfully cleansing element.  It has the ability to remove toxicity while simultaneously being a healing agent.

Tonight our teacher shared with us a great technique as we embraced our Joyful Discomfort, which she has explained is the edge of a pose where it is deep enough to feel joyful, yet not where we are forced or pulled into hurting.

The technique for healing was called R.A.I.N.:

Recognize
Accept (or, Allow)
Investigate and do
Nothing.

In a nutshell, it is a mantra to help you in times of overwhelm, and in yoga, in those places of Joyful Discomfort. If you’d like to explore more, here’s the article on the R.A.I.N mantra.

[ The Experience ]

Yin is a form of yoga that allows you to target areas differently than other forms of yoga. The main difference is that Yin targets, and opens up, the fascia, which is said to store our emotions.

Joyful Discomfort in Yin allows you to open up emotionally, in places such as in the hips (aka your sexual emotions) and the lower back where your kidneys rest.  By the way, the kidneys are said to be where your anger is stored.  And because breathing is so vital to everything you do, I should also mention that the lungs are said to store grief… as we breathed today, sometimes together, mostly individually, our teacher encouraged us to

Breathe in joy, Breathe out grief/shame
Breathe in the present, Breathe out what’s holding you in the past
Breathe in generosity to your SELF, Breathe out the harshness of SELF

This last breath was important, because as we began the class, the teacher opened the space with this story as we reclined in a meditative posture:

A bus driver was driving a bus and a young girl comes up
and offers him a handful of peanuts.
The driver says,
“what a sweet little girl.  Thank you so much for your generosity.”
The girl goes back and a few minutes later,
she comes up with another handful of peanuts.
The driver says, “wow, you are so generous.
Thank you so much for sharing your peanuts with me.”
The young girl returns to her seat.
A few minutes go by and the young girl comes back up
and hands the bus driver another handful of peanuts.
The driver receives them and says,
“Oh, you know, you don’t have to keep doing this.
Thank you for your peanuts, but really,
you should enjoy them yourself. Don’t give them all away.”
And the young girl says,
“It’s OK, my friends and I just like to suck the chocolate off of them.”
(I believe this joke was adapted. Read the “original” here.)

[ The Takeaway ]

With that anecdote, I chuckled in my reclined, relaxed opening posture.

Yin-ing onward, we were encouraged to find ways to add lightness to our night’s experience, and through it, find ways to be more generous to ourselves in our daily life.  She then reminded us that every 6 seconds the mind wanders, and that it’s nothing to worry about or think of as bad… just as something that is, and to gently return to our tool of equal breathing to help get centered in the present.

Then she beautifully layered on our new tool of RAIN sometime during our class. I’d guess that it was maybe around the half-way mark.  Whatever time it was, I received the message of the mantra in the way I was supposed to for that moment, and to be able to share the information with you, herein.

As the 75-minute class came to an end, I found myself crisp and clear, cleansed by the ‘N’ of the mantra, Do Nothing. The N came in handy as my Joyful Discomfort finally started to open me up more than it has in previous Yin Classes, methinks, simply because I no longer felt obligated to identify with any thoughts that were not serving me.

Instead, I was generous to my self, allowing surrender to gravity and The Now.

[ Yoga Opens You Up ]

Yoga is great for many things, like the improvement of flexibility, stress management and weight control.

It is also great for releasing the toxins we have stored up.

I eat relatively clean (vegetarian since my teens), don’t drink (going on 2 years in 7 days) or smoke cigarettes (since earlier this year), and live in a city with the most yummy air you can breathe.  I also choose to only connect with people who add value to my life and fill me up with joy.

However, toxins aren’t just found in your environment, the foods you eat and the people you relate with.  Toxins are connected to our emotions and subsequently, they are released via the chakras, or energy centers, that open up through the process of Yoga.

[ The Experience ]

Day 10!

…and I’ve released, or rather, opened up, SO much this first 1/3 of my 30 Day Yoga Challenge, that I came down with a bit of a sore throat and cough in the last 48 hours.  This morning, I canceled my kickboxing, and thought I could at least make it to the Yoga Studio for an evening Hatha class.

Alas, although I really wanted to head to a class today, I believe in Self Care:

…And because I believe in filling my well, I stayed away from the Studio.  I worked in bed all day (aka “laid low”) and at night, I went out to get some (spicy) Veggie Udon Soup (with extra ginger) and Yam Tempura and Avocado Rolls with my partner.

As soon as we came back from sushi restaurant, I did a 45-minute at-home Yoga session.

[ The Takeaway ]

Daily I meditate and chant, so I made sure I added it into my Yoga practice.  I had my cellphone by me to create 2 or 5 minute intervals for the postures or breath work I integrated into my healing home practice.  Because of my slight congestion, I focused mostly on breath work…

I started with the Chinmaya Mudra I learned Day 8.  I used the equal breathing technique, Sama Vritti Pranayama, I learned in a Yin class on Day 9, pausing before each inhalation and exhalation. I held a favorite pose I learned in another class. I did lymphatic bouncing I’ve learned in my guided meditation practice I started in January of 2014.

I did some vibrational chakra tones to open up.

I did what my body asked of me, pulling from what I’d learned in the last 10 days and from past experience.

I sat in silence.

At the end of my practice tonight, I feel so open, light, and healthier than when I began.

Yoga is a practice that is great in a group/class setting. AND great wherever, too…

[ Safe, Supported ]

  • 9 Yoga Classes ago, on a Friday, I partook in an evening Kundalini Class that begun this 30 Day Yoga Challenge.
  • 1 Class ago (this morning), I partook in a Friday morning Kundalini Class… and easily lifted my head, legs and arms 6 inches off the ground while laying down.  A “feat”, I was not able to do last Friday evening.
  • Tonight, I released deeply in another Yin Class. I released into the mantra
I am safe and supported in the world.

[ The Experience ]

We had a guest teacher. I really enjoyed her style.  We did postures I normally would allow my head to talk me out of doing, like sitting on my knees at the beginning of the class as we opened with a hand posture that allowed us to open up and allow flow of energy to drop into our torso.

This hand posture, called the Chinmaya Mudra, is said to be great for lowering blood pressure and calming the mind.  It is also good for the lungs, which we opened up in class today (and I welcomed greatly):

[ The Takeaway ]

We ended the class with another Chinmaya Mudra.  The teacher asked us to notice how we felt.  Noticeably at the end of the class, as well as during the class, I felt a sense of peace, release and calm.

During class, I was present
and I felt my body finally give over to gravity.

I released my control and deepened into my practice for what I feel has been the first time these 8 days.

Maybe it’s the Chinmaya Mudra. Maybe it’s the consistent showing up. Maybe it’s being gentle with myself that’s helping.

Maybe it’s all of the above.

All I know is that I’m going to keep this up. Because I feel the shift happening already…

[ Kundalini at 9AM?! ]

Oh, no… I’m becoming one of those crazy Yoga people.

Last night I scanned the schedule of classes and saw that my instructor who does Kundalini Friday nights had a 9 AM Friday morning class.

I hesitated with an out loud statement to my partner, “maybe I’ll try to go”.

Then, with confidence I said, “no, I’m not going to try to go. I’m just going to do it.”

[ The Experience ]

Kundalini is like Yoga on Aerobics… and the instructor/Director, Gloria, that teaches the class I go to, makes Kundalini more like

Yoga on Aerobics times P90X times Zen master plus a hint of Iron Man.

LOL

OK, I exaggerate.  I’ve never done P90X, nor an Iron Man Triathlon.  But, her classes are definitely famous (notorious?) for being one-of-a-kind whip-your-bum-into-shape classes… that you’ll end up falling in love with and keep coming back for more and more because she’s made you stop thinking completely. 🙂

[ The Takeaway ]

When my alarm went off at 7:17 AM, I laid there and observed my mind chatter coming up with all the thoughts of how to get out of doing Kundalini at 9AM.  But as 7:57 rolled in, I found my body just moved to its own beat.  My legs just carried me away, and before I knew it…

I was early to class!

And you know what?

Sweat dripped, no poured, down my face and body. I laughed. I DANCED. I listened to my body, not my mind…

And after class, I texted my partner, “What a good decision!”

I felt empowered, rejuvenated and ready for the day in a powerful way.

Would I do it again?

[ Yoga, actually ]

I learned the other day that Yoga was actually used in its original incarnation as a means to get into meditation.

It wasn’t about the poses. It wasn’t about being able to put your leg over your bum (through your legs), or bend your head around your back (while doing an arm raise). Nope.  Yoga was simply a means to get into meditation. To center one’s self back to the core.

The poses, in essence, are just icing on the cake of learning to breathe.

I’m glad I found that out going into what was by far my most difficult class of my self-imposed 30 Day Yoga Challenge tonight.

[ The Experience ]

As I write this, I feel even more grounded and inward than I have been after my other Hatha Yoga classes.  Each instructor is different and tonight my Hatha instructor was different than the others and more intense in his instruction than I’ve experienced thus far.

We did more leg work poses, focused more on the core. Because I’m a newbie, I really had to rely on my breath, to remind my nervous system that all was well as I attempted new ways for my body to express itself.

As I reminded myself to be present with each breath, I went more into a meditative state.

By the end of the session, it was clear that most things we deem “difficult” only get to be that way because of anticipation.

[ The Takeaway ]

As I anticipated less, and focused on my breath more, the “difficulty” diminished as the class went on. Sure, I may have learned a few more poses and did things that pushed my body, but at the end of the day, those were all just extras in the pursuit of my practice of meditation, mindfulness and knowing who I am at my core.

I’ll have to let today’s session sink in a lil’ more…

For now, I’m off to DJ another weekly live 3-hour set.
Excited to see how my energy will move the music this evening.

I feel a deep sense of calm.  I also feel a humbled sense of gratitude for showing up for my SELF to practice yoga and learning to listen to myself, more and more.

My 30 Day Yoga Challenge, Day 5 (Tuesday)!

[ 3-6-5 ]

Today I celebrated the first of many milestones I will experience in the next 365 days:

  • I celebrate being 3 weeks into my 6-Week Transformation Circle for Entrepreneurs. The majority of the 11 participants are Health Coaches and I am so honored to be able to be the Vessel for Their Potential.
  • I celebrate completing 6 weeks of kickboxing, which I entered to win on a whim… and won! 🙂 I am strong and centered and finished this week stronger than I started, and excited to be continuing the practice with my amazing coach, Lydia.
  • I celebrate showing up for 5 days of yoga.  I was gifted 30 days of unlimited yoga 5 days ago, so I took the gift and decided to challenge myself to utilize it to the fullest. Today, I enjoyed a Yoga Basics class…   

[ The Experience ]

So far, I’ve participated in a Yin class, two Hatha Classes (Day 3, Day 4) and a Kundalini Yoga class in my 4 days of this Yoga challenge.  I should note that in 2004 I was part of a Yoga Thai Chi Dance Troupe, so I’m not entirely new to the practice of Yoga in its multi-faceted form.  However, the person who I am now is definitely new, and I am thankful to be back into practice, as I approach it from a new angle.

After a day of coaching clients individually and in group setting, then a crazy kickboxing day, allowing myself to settle into a Yoga Basics class was so fitting and SO welcomed.  It allowed me to release, to be present, and most importantly, my 830PM class allowed me to breathe.

[ The Takeaway ]

I love to challenge myself so that life becomes less challenging.

As I finish Day 5 of my 30 Day Yoga Challenge, I am finding that I feel my body more (I have hips! lol) and that I am even more intentional with my breath than I already am (it’s Day 82 of my challenge to meditate/chant for 40 days, btw).

With every challenge, from holding the space for entrepreneurs to unstick their mindset, to getting back in shape with kickboxing, to learning how to love Yoga, I am realizing that the key to allowing a challenge to become fun, less challenging, and filled with results, is hidden in the breath.

For with every breath, we calm our bodies, our minds and open our hearts to what is… that which speaks (if we’ll listen):

YOU HAVE ALL YOU NEED
YOU ARE PERFECT
YOU ARE ENOUGH
&
YOU HAVE UNLIMITED POTENTIAL.

Breathing allows us another chance to purposefully participate for another 365.

Did you know your thoughts become things?

It’s true.  Thoughts are the DNA of the Universe, and you have the power to create all that you want, desire and deserve simply by thinking.

So, knowing this, wouldn’t it be reasonable to say that you should choose your thoughts wisely?

Clear Your Mind of Clutter

If you are like most people, your mind is filled with a ton of chatter and your life is stress-filled.  Negative thoughts trump the good ones. No matter how hard you try to “stay positive”, you still keep getting the same results.

Why aren’t your positive thoughts working?

Because negativity is a nasty army of extreme force.  Think of it as a weed in a garden.  No matter how great the environment of your harvest (you), or how great the intention to grow your crops through watering every day is (with inspirational, positive thoughts), your seeds (good thoughts), just won’t grow when weeds (negative thoughts) abound in your garden (your mind).

So, what can you do right now that will allow you to be more clear and start seeing your garden grow?  The answer, lies within a simple act of mind clearing.

Remove the weeds

When you start to remove the weeds (negative thoughts, endless chatter), you will have a better chance to see change and transformation happen.
