My 10 Day Meditation Challenge, Day 3

(A Better Observer)

  [ The Experience ]

97 days ago, I challenged myself to meditate and chant for 40 consecutive days.  

It’s Day 3 of this 10 Day Meditation Challenge, and today we were guided to become a better observer of our thoughts (and not a leaf blown in the wind of our thoughts). I noticed that my thoughts were either silent, or of creating new business cards. Haha.

[ My thoughts about Headspace ]

The use of videos to present value alongside the meditations are great tools to help you understand the practice of meditation. I love how I can track my progress and be a part of a larger community of simultaneous meditators. I also love that you can invite others to participate with you…

[ The Takeaway ]

I am allowing myself to be Guided in this new way of experiencing my meditation practice using the Headspace App.

With that allowance, I am able to relax fully and breathe deeper.  I often try to force myself into what I feel things should be or how they should go.  But when I let that go, and do my best to be a better observer of my life, I feel lighter in the process.

[ This just in ]

I completed this post and checked my email to send a fellow blogger an email.  As I did, I see that Headspace sent me a congratulatory email marking my 3rd completed day! Yay!  I enjoyed the science fact in the email:

(No Try, Just Do… Part 2)

[ Safe, Supported ]

  • 9 Yoga Classes ago, on a Friday, I partook in an evening Kundalini Class that begun this 30 Day Yoga Challenge.
  • 1 Class ago (this morning), I partook in a Friday morning Kundalini Class… and easily lifted my head, legs and arms 6 inches off the ground while laying down.  A “feat”, I was not able to do last Friday evening.
  • Tonight, I released deeply in another Yin Class. I released into the mantra
I am safe and supported in the world.

[ The Experience ]

We had a guest teacher. I really enjoyed her style.  We did postures I normally would allow my head to talk me out of doing, like sitting on my knees at the beginning of the class as we opened with a hand posture that allowed us to open up and allow flow of energy to drop into our torso.

This hand posture, called the Chinmaya Mudra, is said to be great for lowering blood pressure and calming the mind.  It is also good for the lungs, which we opened up in class today (and I welcomed greatly):

[ The Takeaway ]

We ended the class with another Chinmaya Mudra.  The teacher asked us to notice how we felt.  Noticeably at the end of the class, as well as during the class, I felt a sense of peace, release and calm.

During class, I was present
and I felt my body finally give over to gravity.

I released my control and deepened into my practice for what I feel has been the first time these 8 days.

Maybe it’s the Chinmaya Mudra. Maybe it’s the consistent showing up. Maybe it’s being gentle with myself that’s helping.

Maybe it’s all of the above.

All I know is that I’m going to keep this up. Because I feel the shift happening already…

(No Try, Just Do… Part 1)

[ Kundalini at 9AM?! ]

Oh, no… I’m becoming one of those crazy Yoga people.

Last night I scanned the schedule of classes and saw that my instructor who does Kundalini Friday nights had a 9 AM Friday morning class.

I hesitated with an out loud statement to my partner, “maybe I’ll try to go”.

Then, with confidence I said, “no, I’m not going to try to go. I’m just going to do it.”

[ The Experience ]

Kundalini is like Yoga on Aerobics… and the instructor/Director, Gloria, that teaches the class I go to, makes Kundalini more like

Yoga on Aerobics times P90X times Zen master plus a hint of Iron Man.

LOL

OK, I exaggerate.  I’ve never done P90X, nor an Iron Man Triathlon.  But, her classes are definitely famous (notorious?) for being one-of-a-kind whip-your-bum-into-shape classes… that you’ll end up falling in love with and keep coming back for more and more because she’s made you stop thinking completely. 🙂

[ The Takeaway ]

When my alarm went off at 7:17 AM, I laid there and observed my mind chatter coming up with all the thoughts of how to get out of doing Kundalini at 9AM.  But as 7:57 rolled in, I found my body just moved to its own beat.  My legs just carried me away, and before I knew it…

I was early to class!

And you know what?

Sweat dripped, no poured, down my face and body. I laughed. I DANCED. I listened to my body, not my mind…

And after class, I texted my partner, “What a good decision!”

I felt empowered, rejuvenated and ready for the day in a powerful way.

Would I do it again?

My 30 Day Yoga Challenge, Day 4 (Monday)!

yogabanana-[ What’s Your Banana? ]

Today I learned something in my 4PM Hatha Yoga class that gave me a much needed “Eureka-aha” moment. A “Eureka-aha” is what I like to think of as SO insightful, it’s more than a Eureka and even more than an ah-a. It’s kinda like the Universe slapping you on the face and (gently, yet powerfully) telling you to WAKE UP.

Cool? 🙂

With that, I’ll share with you what I learned:

Apparently, the way to trap a monkey is with a cage that has a hole that is big enough for a monkey’s hand to get into, and small enough for a banana inside to not get out of.

A monkey will stick its hand in the cage to retrieve the banana, and pull and pull.  They’ll see the hunter and keep pulling at it. But, the cage is so cleverly designed that no matter how hard the monkey tries, the banana will just stay in the cage.  And the hunter just keeps coming, while the monkey holds on to the banana…

What are you holding on to that is no longer serving you?

That’s your banana.

*Disclaimer: I am not a hunter. I am totally a gathering seeds, vegetarian, hippie-like type. AND I also value a good anecdote that moves me forward in my evolution.

*2nd Disclaimer: I just watched the Ferguson verdict… I do not condone police brutality.

[ The Experience ]

Mondays can either go one of two ways… really well, or dreadfully slow.

Today, my Monday flowed well, as I have been focused on the power of release and letting go.  This year I have shed a lot of my toxic bananas (and believe me, there were a bunch!)  Adding in Hatha Yoga today allowed me to tap into “what is”, to be present, while letting go of what no longer is serving me.

[ The Takeaway ]

We have a lot to let go of, as individuals and as a Human People. I say this on the eve of watching The Ferguson Decision that has placed Americans back into the reason why many of us can’t honestly find a way to “let go”.

So, all I can do, is find ways to let go, for me, for my SELF, first and foremost, and see if it will inspire someone else to do the same. Because, the world will just keep presenting situations and people that can keep us stuck.  Ultimately, the choice is up to you to either continue to hold on while the hunter attacks, or find a way to simply just let go…

My 30 Day Yoga Challenge, Day 2!

yogachallengeYay! Day 2… check!

Today I borrowed a 5-year old with my partner so that we could experience this amazing museum called Science World at Telus World of Science.  We have been wanting to check out their Light exhibit and it was nice to give his parents a weekend afternoon break.

It was a great day… and more tiring that expected! I’m a former nanny, so I know the need to be present with children and that with the presence comes a joyful exhaustion.

Which is why doing a Yin Yoga Class was perfect to end the day.

[ The Experience ]

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 9.29.47 PMYin allowed me to feel relaxed and refreshed. I feel I released the energy of this past week, as well as the energy of today, so that I am back to center for tomorrow, and the upcoming week.

I learned a lot today about Light.  To feel and understand Light is a wonderful thing, and I am grateful that I got to tap into the magic of light through a child’s eyes and via yoga.

[ The Takeaway ]

If you are a nanny, a caregiver, an athlete or have a need to de-stress, then I encourage you to participate in a Yin Yoga class near you! 🙂
