“8 Ways To Save Your Hearing!”
Can’t hear a quiet conversation? Phone conversations getting lower than they used to?
You now live in a world where you are constantly dialed-in to electronics via earplugs and headphones. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve also danced until the wee hours of the morning a few times, standing in front of HUGE speakers, which even though the Music and Dancing was good, couldn’t be good for your Ears in the long-run.
You may have friends like me who have the ringing in their ears (and got it under the age of 30). You may not. But the main thing is that you can save your hearing, if you follow these 8 steps.
See you on the dancefloor!
- Keep earplugs handy. Earplugs are inexpensive and these days, come in handy carrying cases. Throw a pair in your glovebox, toolbox, purse, car… have them handy! PS: Exposure to sounds louder than 85 decibels (like rock concerts, video arcades, even some noisy health clubs) damage your inner ear!
- Turn it down! 1 in 3 adults and 3 in 5 teens who use portable music devises play them TOO loud. I know you want to keep it “1hundred”, but for the sake of your ears, keep it 50% or less.
- Ease up on the cotton swabs. I know you love that feeling of a swab in the ear. But earwax (a common cause of temporary hearing loss), can get stuck deep inside your ear canal when you use cotton swabs. Try wax removal products instead.
- Go for healthy blood sugar. “People with diabetes are twice as likely to have hearing loss as people with normal blood sugar levels. Pre-diabetes? Your risk is 30% higher.” PS: You can reverse diabetes with the help of good nutrition (why not try a Health Coach to help you get there!)
- Lower your blood pressure. “High blood pressure can speed up age-related hearing loss by reducing the flow of blood to your inner ear or even to brain areas involved with hearing.”
- Take early signs seriously. Sayin’ “What?” a lot, not only can wear on some people’s patience, but it can also mean that you are wearing down your ears. If you have symptoms, as your doctor to refer you to a hearing specialist asap.
- Avoid/Reduce meds. “Some 130 prescription and over-the-counter drugs, from ibuprofen and diuretics to certain antibiotics, can muffle hearing.” Most of the time, hearing returns once you’ve stopped taking them. Consult with you doctor.
- Manage your weight. “If you’re more than a few pounds over your ideal weight, your risk of hearing loss could be 17-25% higher than normal.” So get active. And if you use music playing during your physical activity, remember to turn it down!
